FCIA Response to Proposed Tariffs and Counter-Tariffs on Chocolate
Seattle, WA - Feb. 4, 2025 - The fine chocolate industry comprises hundreds of small and medium sized businesses and thousands of jobs that stand to suffer harm if the proposed tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China are enacted.
Robust trade of finished chocolate products including craft chocolate bars, bean-to-bar chocolate bars, bon bon and truffle collections, and baked goods is important to the Fine Chocolate Industry. The proposed tariffs on goods coming from the listed countries as well as the proposed retaliatory counter-tariffs by the listed countries will certainly increase the price to consumers of fine chocolate. With raw cacao (the primary ingredient of chocolate) prices already spiking to record highs due to a global shortage caused by poor weather conditions and crop disease, any further price increases will put fine chocolate out of reach for a large group of buyers.
The Fine Chocolate Industry Association urges policymakers to continue working together to protect customers’ access to fine chocolate and prevent tariffs that affect the industry.
